Tooth Whitening should be carried out by professionals

The General Dental Council (GDC) has successfully prosecuted two individuals within a week for tooth whitening offences.

Nicole Fenwick pleaded guilty on 13 July 2016, at the Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court to unlawfully practising dentistry at Davidoff Clinic, 61 Pyle Street, Isle of Wight. She also pleaded guilty to unlawfully using a protected title.  Ms Fenwick was sentenced to a 12 month conditional discharge and was  ordered to pay a £20 victim surcharge and the GDC’s costs of £800.

Mr John Spink pleaded guilty at Eastbourne Magistrates’ Court on 15 July 2016 for carrying out tooth whitening while unregistered. He was also sentenced to a 12 month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £1, 500 towards the GDC’s costs. Mr Spink had been offering services at Shadi Danin Medi Spa Clinic, 70 Church Road, Brighton.

These two cases follow four successful prosecutions between May and July of this year.

Francesca Keen, Head of Illegal Practice at the GDC, said: “With two further successful prosecutions against illegal tooth whiteners in July, we are confident that this issue is being taken seriously by the courts.

“We are here to protect the public from unscrupulous providers who prey on innocent members of the public.

“These individuals are flouting the law by offering tooth whitening while not on the register of dental professionals, and neither have the skills, training and qualifications to be offering such services safely.

“We have seen examples of when the treatment is not carried out properly by a registered professional, there is a real risk of permanent damage to teeth.

“It is important that anybody considering having their teeth whitened ensure that it is carried out a trained and qualified professional.  Our Private Liverpool Dentist offers safe and effective tooth whitening. If you would like to discuss tooth whitening with one of our team, please contact us.
